Thanks For Stepping Up!

Everyone owes a big "THANK YOU!" to Michelle W and Donna F, for stepping up to work concessions tonight and Friday. Thanks, ladies!

Next Verse, Same As the First...

Here we are, in the same situation as last week. Kids have done the right thing and faithfully signed up for concessions shifts, but adults have not stepped up. We need an adult for tonight (Tuesday Dec. 18) and an adult for Friday Dec. 21. We gain between $175 and $300 for each evening of concessions work, and that money directly benefits the entire band program. So email McKee and sign up, so that we don't throw tonight's money away.

Thursday, December 13, 2012

READ THIS!!

Concessions for Friday Dec. 14 has 4 great kids signed up, but no adult. We MUST have an adult or we can't open. And we don't have the option of not opening, because we have made a commitment to the basketball program to be there. So we MUST have an adult.

Now, McKee does all the shopping and setup work, so McKee will NOT be the adult. There are many parent-types who have not yet signed up. If YOU are one of those, then YOU can be the adult. Email McKee now, and be the adult.

Basketball Concessions!

Wow - it's already time for basketball season! This is a great thing for us, because we are the food concessionaires for THS Basketball - yay!

Here's how it works:
  • Every student who is part of a Tigard High Band performing ensemble is required to work concessions at least once during the basketball season. Students who enjoy concessions work may work more than one shift, but may not sign up for additional shifts until everyone has signed up once. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to work more than one shift.
  • Parent-types are needed at each concession event. One is OK - two are better.
  • Games are on Tuesdays and Fridays, with two Wednesday games at the beginning of the season. Shifts typically begin at 5pm and finish around 9ish.
  • McKee opens each concession event.
  • A Closing Team is essential to the success of out concessions event. The Closing Team is made up of 2 - 4 adults who are trained in closing procedures. One member of the Closing Team will come to THS toward the end of the game to coordinate the concessions workers in putting away all food, supplies, etc. and the cleanup of the concessions stand. (Being a member of the Closing Team is a GREAT way to COMPLETELY AVOID actually selling any hot dogs or nacho cheese!)
  • Concessions signup sheets will be posted Monday in the Band Room, with slots for 4 students and 2 parent-types for most games. The four league double-header games will have slots for 6 students.
Want to see the schedule, and maybe send in your shift request before next week? Check out the link on the sidebar, and then send an email to kmckee@ttsd.k12.or.us

Tonight's Football Pep Game

Playoff football at Hillsboro Stadium is just a few hours away, and we're coming to help our Tigard Tigers football team beat those Central Catholic Rams with lots of pep, pep, pep! Be aware, the forecast calls for 50 degrees and rain, so it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that all members dress warmly and in water-resistant clothing. We will probably be under cover, but we need to be prepared in case the wind blows the rain onto us.

The band room will be open at 5:15 for our 5:35 call time and the bus WILL leave at 5:45, so don't be late.

See you soon!

Playoff Football Continues!

The Tigard High football guys very handily defeated those Canby Cougars - yay! You know what THAT means:

ROAD TRIP!!!

Tigard vs. Central Catholic,
at Hillsboro Stadium!

The next round will be played the day after Thanksgiving. All band members who are in town are asked to come and play pep for our boys. The game begins at 7pm, so call time will be 5:35pm, THS Band Room, Friday November 23. We'll bus over to Hillsboro Stadium and pep, pep, pep the night away!

If you can not be at the game, please email McKee. Otherwise, we will see you Friday!

We're Gonna Be on TV!

So here's the deal, folks: if our football boys beat Canby this Friday, the KATU High School Blitz will broadcast LIVE from Tigard High! And we'll be the in-house band!
  • Call time for the FB game is 6pm
  • We'll play lots of pep and a couple of songs for the Tigerettes, TBD. Stay tuned for details.
  • Assuming the boys win, call time for the TV show is 11pm. Dress is blue jeans and pep shirts.
  • In between the game and TV, we'll do something great! Again, TBD.
  • KATU High School Blitz ends at midnight, and that's when we go home. Whew!
More details to come - watch this space!

Football Playoffs Are Here!

Hey folks, it's time for football playoffs! This Friday, your Tigard Tiger Varsity team will take on the Reynolds Raiders and it's a black-out! So our pep outfits would be perfect - just sayin'. Including the Marching Ensemble. And please be aware, it's supposed to be MUCH colder than it has been lately. Friday's high temperature is expected to be only 48 degrees, and the low will dip down to 33 - so it will get COLD after the sun sets! Please dress accordingly.

Seniors, we will be recognizing you Friday, so you may want to wear silly hats so we know who you are!

Call time is 6pm for everyone - Pep Band and NWAPA Class A Champions alike...

Final Rehearsal Week Schedule!

OK friends, this is it! Let's finish this up with a great week of rehearsal and make that last great impression at Championships on Saturday. YAY!

We've modified the schedule for this final week of practice, to optimize our rehearsal time together. We have some bad weather coming Wednesday, and we have the opportunity to get on the field Friday, so here's what the week looks like:
  • Monday: 5 - 9 Regular rehearsal (rain predicted to not come in until 10 PM!)
  • Wednesday: 5 - 7 Indoor rehearsal (100% chance of soaking rain - working outside in those conditions won't help us improve at this point)
  • Friday: 6 - 7:30 Outdoor rehearsal (forecast is for partly cloudy skies, so let's get in one last field rehearsal!)
  • Friday: 7:30 - 8:30  LOAD THE TRUCK!
Want to know what Saturday will look like? Check out the schedule on the sidebar.

YAY MARCHING BAND!

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

We're in the Home Stretch!

It's the last week and 1/2 of Marching Band for 2012. Boy, did that go by fast!
Now it's time to really work on refining what we've been doing. And we all need to do our collective best to employ habits that will help us maintain good health through the rest of the season.
Take a look at the schedule on the sidebar, so that you know what's up for Friday and Saturday.
And remember, drink water.

Strange Week Number Two

Well, after an odd rehearsal week we had a GREAT weekend - whoo hoo! And now, here comes another odd week.

This is the week most football games statewide are played on Thursday, not Friday. Tigard is part of the Thursday madness, so that means the Freshmen play on Wednesday, and THAT means we have no Wednesday field access again. Boo.

So we'll have a similar (but slightly different) schedule again this week. Regular rehearsal Monday. Move Wednesday's rehearsal to Tuesday, regular hours. Nothing on Wednesday. Home football game Thursday. Nothing additional on the marching front until the following Monday, when we return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Monday          Rehearsal          5-9
Tuesday         Rehearsal          5-9
Wednesday    Nothing
Thursday       Football             5:30 Call

Saturday, October 6, 2012

Hey Band! (hey what?)

IT IS VITAL THAT YOU BRING YOUR UNIFORM BAG AND HANGER WITH YOU TODAY!!

You will be taking your uniform off and hanging it up between performances - AND YOU NEED YOUR HANGER AND BAG TO DO THAT!

That is all.

Looking Forward to FOB (October 20)

OK folks - it is apparent that our prelim performance time at the U of O Fessstival of Bands will be quite early - we don't have a firm time yet, but we do know that Class A will go 1st, and we will be the 4th Class A band performing that morning. So, we are making plans to drive down the night before and stay at our favorite inexpensive Eugene-area motel, the Springfield Motel 6. Mr. Neffendorf has given us the go-ahead and now we just need to get the OK from Dr. Rada - I do not anticipate any problems with that.

We will publish our itinerary in a couple of weeks, but right now I am planning to have us leave THS at 8:30 pm that Friday evening. The lodging cost is $15/student and many of you have student account $$ available that can be transferred.

Some parents are going to want to drive down and join us. I will need this information sooner than later. I need to talk to the good folks at Motel 6 next Monday morning and give a firm number of rooms we will need, so anyone wanting to join us will need to send me the information via email this week. Parent/adult cost under our group rate will be $50 per room - what a bargain!

More information to come -

"I Have a Conflict - What Do I Do?!?"

The question has come up a few times very recently about conflicts between Marching Band and (fill in the blank) activities. Sometimes the conflict is with rehearsal, and there is one particular event that some folks are very interested in that conflicts with a performance. Here's the lowdown:

  • Rehearsals are essential to our overall success. If you are truly ill (raging sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, etc), we don't want you to infect the rest of us and you should probably stay home. If you are "ill" (tired, lethargic, bummed out, weary, ticked off, sore, etc), get off your behind and get to rehearsal! If you have relatives who are in town for this night only and you won't see them again until you get married in another 15 years, bring them to rehearsal with you and let them see from the stands this very cool thing you do. If your mom is missing you and wants to have dinner with you, take her out on a Tuesday, or a Thursday, or a Sunday, or any other day when you are not expected to be at Marching Band. Here's the deal: if you are gone, it affects everyone around you and the total sound and picture. UNLESS THERE ARE OVER-THE-TOP EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES, COME TO ALL REHEARSALS. PERIOD.
  • Performances are not optional. Period. I too would love to go with a group of my friends on a weekend trip to Ashland and see the fabulous Shakespearean theatre and watch plays, but I have made a commitment to the Tigard High Marching Band. And if I am gone, the entire group will suffer. That is not an exaggeration - the performance will not be successful and the scores will go down. Meanwhile, I'm off having fun and my bandmates are back with the MB doing their job. Not cool, not ok. You've made a decision to be part of a group - now be a person of integrity.
This should be the end of this conversation.

MB PSAT testers

If you are in MB, you CAN NOT take the PSAT test when it is given at Tigard High - you'll be in Eugene that day. And no, I will not allow you to miss the competition to take the test - that would be detrimental to the group and let your bandmates down. No worries - La Salle High School in Milwaukie has graciously offered to allow a limited number of us to test with them when they take it on Wednesday morning October 17. Yay!

If taking the PSAT this year is important to you (this is a test primarily for Juniors), please email McKee to sign up to take the mid-week La Salle PSAT test. You must bring a check for $25 to McKee by Friday September 21, made payable to THS Band Boosters (we will then write one check for La Salle). To take the test, you must be at La Salle High School on Wednesday October 17 by 7:30 in the morning. Your absence for the morning of the test WILL be excused.

Please note: This is NOT a THS Band field trip, and WE WILL NOT PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION TO OR FROM THE TESTING SITE. You and your parent will need to decide how you will travel to and from the test. In the past, some have arranged to car pool, with perhaps one parent taking a group to La Salle and another picking the group up when finished. After you finish, you will return to THS and finish out your day.

Again, email McKee and bring your $25 check on or before Friday September 21 to participate in the La Salle PSAT.

SHOW TIME!!!

Hey Band! (hey what?)

It's time for our first performance of the year  - yay! Here's what you need to know:
  • Call time for MB is 5:30
  • Call time for everyone else is 5:45
  • Dress for the evening is pep shirt, marching shoes, and pants (jeans, for example)
  • Don't have marching shoes? Make sure your shoes are close-toed types [athletic shoes are a good choice]
PLEASE make sure you eat well and hydrate tonight and tomorrow. This is essential!

And for those who aren't sure what will happen, here's the nitty gritty:
  • Pit loads
  • Band warms up
  • Everyone lines up and marches in
  • We create the tunnel for the team to run through (not sure what that means? Don't worry - just follow the person in front of you)
  • Fight Song, then Banner
  • We move to the stands and pep, pep, pep for the team
  • Partway through 2nd quarter, we move down from the stands and warm up (pit moves to the north sideline)
  • MB lines up to take the field; Pep Band moves in behind
  • MB presents show opener and helicopters to the back hash when done; Pep Band runs out to join
  • Band plays Hey Baby! and Fight Song for Tigerettes
  • Band gathers in the south endzone - plays Fight Song when team runs out
  • Short break during the beginning of 3rd quarter - eat cheese!
  • More pep, pep, pep
  • Tigard wins and we play Celebration!
  • Band lines up on field and we march out
  • Everyone meets in the band room (Parents, please wait outside - the room's too small to invite everyone in. Thanks!) A few minutes of chatting, then put things away
  • AND, go home!
Got it? Good! Now, go get some rest - we've got a big day ahead of us!

A Special "Thank You"!

The final thing that had to be accomplished at Wednesday night's rehearsal was to teach and practice how to get on and off the field in a performance situation. No big deal, right? Au contraire, mon frere! It's actually quite a complicated ballet to get the drumline, guard, horns, and especially the pit on, set, picked up, and off in a timely and effective fashion. The pit rehearsal part always takes the longest, but the good news is that everyone now knows what to do and we're ready to go for Friday's performance!

Thank you to all the parents who waited patiently for the kids to finish - especially the pit parents. That took a long time - whew! And we promise - such a late ending time will not happen again.

Thanks again -it made all the difference.

Tuesday Night Special!

Hey folks - we've got our first public performance coming up this Friday! Whoo hoo! To make sure we're at our best, we're going to add that additional rehearsal this Tuesday evening. The band room will be open at 6:30 for the pit to start loading - please make sure you arrive early enough to be on the field and ready to rehearse by 7pm.

We'll be done on the field by 8:30. And Pit, remember that it always takes us an additional 20 minutes or so to get all your stuff put away.

See you Tuesday!

Back to School Business Days - coming to a school near you!

Back to School Business Days begin tomorrow (Tuesday) - Juniors at 9am and Sophomores at 12:30. [And yes, Seniors at 9am and Freshmen at 12:30pm on Thursday).
"But - but - McKee, that's right in the middle of Marching Band rehearsal! What will we do? I'm so confused!"

No worries, my fine young friends - we will make sure that you are able to take care of your school business AND rehearse. Yay! The nice office folks are willing to let each of our respective class MB groups step to the front of the line (provided you are ready to go BEFORE the appointed time). Your job? Once you begin the process, you MUST complete things very quickly and with all deliberate haste, so you can then return to rehearsal. And remember, you already have a locker, so no need to stand in THAT line.

Oh, and what about PSAT fees? Well, we will be in Eugene on the PSAT Saturday, so you will NOT be taking it at Tigard. Instead, we will partner with a local private school and our MB testers take the PSAT on Wednesday October 17 with their students. So DO NOT PAY PSAT FEES TO TIGARD HIGH! We will collect that fee separately to pay the kind folks who are helping us out. More complete information should come your way later this week.

We Were Hoping For $5...

We never know each year when we go into the Balloon Festival events just how much revenue will be generated. The conversation goes something like this: "Well, we HOPE to be able to credit $5 per hour volunteered - we'll see how things go this year". Well folks, the final numbers are in, and the amount credited for each recorded hour is (drumroll, please)...

$5 - YAY!

"Oh joy, oh rapture unforeseen,
the clouded sky is now serene!"
(Bonus points to those who know the musical reference...)

So when YOU want to use any or all of the amount that has been credited to YOUR student account - to buy a tuner, purchase guard equipment, or

**ahem** PAY BAND FEES **ahem**,

YOU must complete a transfer form and deposit it to the Black Box. This step is essential - nothing happens to YOUR account until and unless YOU submit that transfer form.

And when YOU are prioritizing how to use those student account funds, may we please remind everyone that the BAND FEES are used to pay the bills, so that we can all run our fabulous Jazz, Concert, Symphonic, Wind, Marching, WG, and WDL programs.

Carry on...

Fireworks Reward Party!

Did YOU work at either Fireworks Booth? Were you in charge? Did you help by selling, or setting up, or putting things away, or depositing the money?  Then YOU are invited to a celebratory Fireworks Reward Party at McKee's house! It's a BBQ - and there's even swimming for those who wish! Tuesday August 21, beginning at 6pm. Can't get there by 6? That's ok - come when you can! Please send an RSVP email to this link so that we can plan properly - no running out of food here!

And BTW, this is truly for those who worked. Those who didn't help (your joined-at-the-hip bestie, your boy/girlfriend, etc) will have to find something else to do that evening. And if they are sad about not coming, remind them that they too can work Fireworks - next year!

All right folks - Balloon Fest shifts are now posted! Check out the pages on the sidebar, and if you want to sign up for an additional shift or two, email McKee right away. Available spots are noted in yellow highlight. Remember, an adult can fill a student spot, but a student can not fill an adult spot.

And FYI, if anyone inadvertently signed up for Security and Concessions shifts that overlapped, the Concessions was dropped in favor of the Security. As the Band, we can accomplish great and wonderful things, but even we can not be in two places at once.

OCI INVITATIONAL!

Need to check out information about student workers for Saturday? Look on the sidebar at "OCI Student Workers".

Want to know the details for the Invitational? Here they are:
This is OCI's big "SEND OFF" show, prior to leaving for Championships in Dayton next week! Admission for this day of fun performances is $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors. All admissions and donations will go directly to help offset rising costs of traveling to Dayton. Concessions will be provided by and directly benefit the THS Band program.

Hey parents! Want to help? Please email McKee with your offer! (and if you can't, no worries - many of you have been very helpful all year long.)
Thanks to Lynn R, Linda E, Michelle W, Laurie W, Steve A, Tim G, Dave K, and Donna F for volunteering, and a HUGE thanks to Kathy and Jeff Reddicks for their advance help with the Pop Can Drive!
