Check out the map below to see where you should arrive. And make sure you arrive 10-15 minutes BEFORE your shift begins. Not sure when you're signed up for Security? Check out the pages on the sidebar.
Security and Concessions workers, please report to the Band Trailer on 92nd.
And remember, you need water and sunscreen!! And maybe an umbrella!
Balloon Festival is this week, and we're down to it. We still have a few key times we MUST fill. PLEASE, sign up for one of these spots, so that we can fulfill our obligation to the Balloon Festival folks.
We are ONE WEEK away from Balloon Festival, and we need people to sign up for Security Monitor shifts. Our contractual obligation is for these shifts; once they are filled, we will turn out attention to the Soccer Concessions. Here are our needs:
Friday 6/23 - 11 Student shiftsand 3Adult shifts
Saturday 6/24 - 9Student shifts and 2 Adult shifts
Sunday 6/25 - 8 Student shifts
Take a look on the sidebar to see what spots are open.
Remember, an adult MAY fill a Student shift. A student MAY NOT fill an Adult shift.
It's time to get serious about Balloon Festival signups! Remember, ALL THE MONEY we get from providing monitors and soccer concessions at the great Tigard Festival of Balloons is then available to Balloon Fest volunteers to be used toward marching program fair share fees, and toward our upcoming 2018 Spring Disney Performance Tour!!
Balloon Festival is June 23, 24, and 25. We have early morning shifts (get in, get done, get on with your day), mid-day shifts (sleep in, and then come and volunteer), and nighttime shifts (do what you want during the day, then come to Balloon Fest!). And remember, you get FREE Balloon Festival Passes for volunteering! Questions? Click here to email McKee for more information.
Well, the 2017 year in band is just about finished - whew! So now, it's time to think about next year - yay! Here are two things to keep in mind:
The famous Tigard Color Guard and Marching Band Try-It-Outs are Monday and Wednesday June 12 and 14, from 5 - 8 pm. No experience needed! Come and see what we're all about, and maybe YOU'LL want to join our award-winning group! Bring a friend - the more, the merrier! Location: THS Band Room.
The Festival of Balloons in Tigard is one of the band program's biggest fundraisers of the year. To sign up, CLICK HERE and choose what you want to do, and when. We provide security monitors for the Festival itself, and we also sell food and drink concessions during the Festival soccer tournament. This is a great way to earn funds to help out with Fair Share Fees, or to raise funds for that Spring band tour to Disneyland! And remember, an adult MAY fill a Student job, but a student MAY NOT fill and Adult job.
I really like (in no particular order) Economics, Marching Band, my students, Jesus, my family, politics, NewsHour, jazz, cats, snow, MLB (yes, Portland needs a team!), the US Constitution, hardwood floors, Christmas trees, social justice, ESPN, Margaret Truman mysteries, camping, and a whole lot of other stuff. My (F)friends at Wayside have a lot to say that I find important; if you're interested, CLICK HERE to see what we talk about.
I also publish an infrequent commentary that might be of interest. CLICK HERE to see what I have to say.

Why Newberg is Important to Me
Newberg holds a special place in my heart. Although I have not lived there since 1977, I am a proud Newberg High School graduate. It was at NHS that band director Dick Elliot gave me the confidence to become a life-long percussionist, and choir director George White helped me develop the singing voice that led to my participation in the Portland Symphonic Choir, the chorus of the Oregon Symphony. Social studies teachers Dan Lever and Ed Wiesehan instilled in me the understanding that the names and dates of events are such a small part of learning about history – they helped their students see the how and the why, and led us to discernment and interpretation, essential components of critical thinking. And for me, the influence of these four educators and several others at Newberg High helped me to decide to pursue a career in education.

Newberg is where I met the man I married, introduced by a friend in the lobby of Pennington Hall at George Fox College (now University). Newberg is where both of my daughters moved for their own post-secondary experience, each graduating from Fox. I have many dear friends in Newberg, including those in my faith community. Newberg is where my parents-in-law retired, living the final years of their lives at the aging-in-place community at Friendsview.

Newberg is a town of 25,000+ in the heart of Oregon Wine Country, with both small-town shops like Chapters Books & Coffee and suburban-type businesses including Fred Meyer. Community events include the 1st Friday Artwalk, Wednesday (evening) Market, the Summer Concert Series at the Chehalem Cultural Center, the yearly Old Fashioned Festival, and much more. Newberg is one of my favorite towns, for so many reasons.
